How a correction will be recorded

Corrections are published on this page, dated, newest first. Each entry names the page it affects and carries four parts: the wrong text as it was published, the right text that replaced it, the document that settled the question, and the date the change was made. The page itself carries the corrected text and its last-substantively-updated date moves; nothing is edited silently and no entry is removed from this page once it has been posted.

A correction is issued when a statement of fact on this site is wrong: a section number, an edition year, a date, a figure, a quotation, a name, or an attribution of a claim to a document that does not contain it. Rewriting a sentence for clarity is not a correction and is not recorded here.

Two things are deliberately not treated as corrections. Where two sources disagree, the page prints both and names each — that is a contested item, not an error, and it is settled only by a document, not by preference. Where a question could not be answered from a document that was opened, the page says so in its numbered what this page does not establish list; filling one of those gaps later is an update to that list rather than a correction.

Every document behind a claim on this site is listed at Every document this site cites. A correction entry links the document that settled the question, so the reader who found the error can read the same page that fixed it.
