Richmond County Roofing

A survey of roofs on one- and two-family houses in Richmond County, New York.

Independent. Not a contractor. No phone number.

Every document this site cites

One entry for each document behind a rule, a number or a quotation anywhere on this site, deduplicated and grouped by the organisation that published it.

How this register works

Entries are grouped by publisher, and the publishers are in alphabetical order. Each entry carries the publisher, the document title, the edition or the date where the document has one, and a link to the copy that was opened. Where a document is sold rather than published — the ASTM, UL and FM designations the Building Code names, for example — it is listed without a link, and the code section that requires it is given instead. Nothing here is linked to a search result, a summary or a page that was not opened.

Access dates are printed where this register holds one. They are given for datasets, for price series, for agency forms that are revised without a new edition number, and for manufacturer documents. They are omitted for a code chapter whose edition year already dates it. An article's own numbered Sources list is the authority for the date on which a document was opened for a specific claim on that page.

Several city and trade hosts return an HTTP 403 to anything that is not a browser. That is a block on automated clients, not a dead document: the pages at a810-bisweb.nyc.gov, a810-dobnow.nyc.gov, and the pages published by Angi, SquareDash and several trade sites open normally in a browser. Where that applies it is stated on the entry.

Most of the articles this register serves have not been published yet. The documents are listed once here, in one place, so that the register is the site's index of evidence rather than a by-product of whichever pages happen to exist.

The register

Angi

  • How Much Does Roof Replacement Cost?, New York, New York page, 2026. Lead-generation marketing data: no methodology and no job scope are published with the figures. Cited only as a named secondary source in the cost article, alongside the figure it contradicts. angi.com — returns 403 to automated clients.

ANSI, SPRI and FM Approvals

  • ANSI/SPRI/FM 4435 ES-1, test methods RE-1, RE-2 and RE-3. Named at § 1504.5 of the 2022 New York City Building Code as the test standard for metal edge securement on low-slope roofs. Sold, not published; no link.

  • Ponding Water Basics: Proper Drainage Design and Low-Slope Roofs. The source of the 48-hour ponding definition and of the quarter-inch-per-foot slope recommendation. An industry recommendation, not a New York City requirement. asphaltroofing.org

ASTM International

ASTM standards are sold rather than published, so no link is given. Each designation is listed with the section of the 2022 New York City Building Code that names it, which is the form in which it reaches a homeowner: printed on a bundle wrapper or on a roll of underlayment.

  • ASTM D226 Type I, ASTM D4869 Type I and ASTM D6757 — underlayment for asphalt shingles, § 1507.2.3.
  • ASTM D1970 — self-adhering polymer modified bitumen sheet, § 1507.2.4. The material specification behind the ice barrier at § 1507.2.8.1.

  • ASTM D3161 and ASTM D7158 — the wind-resistance classifications for asphalt shingles, § 1504.1.1 and Table 1504.1.1. The same section requires the classification to be printed on the packaging.
  • ASTM D3909 and ASTM D6380 — mineral-surfaced and smooth roll roofing, used for open and closed valley linings, § 1507.2.9.2.
  • ASTM D4434, ASTM D6754 and ASTM D6878 — single-ply thermoplastic membranes, § 1507.13.
  • ASTM C1549, ASTM E1918, ASTM C1371, ASTM E408 and ASTM E1980 — solar reflectance, thermal emittance and solar reflectance index, the test methods behind the cool-roof thresholds at § 1504.9.

Documents that are named on this site but are not in this register

A document is in the register only if it was opened. Four documents are named in the prose of this site and are deliberately absent from the list above, because no copy of them was read:

  1. ASCE 7, Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures. The Building Code hands snow load, ponding and wind velocity pressure to it by reference. It is sold, and no copy was opened, so no value from it appears anywhere on this site — in particular no comparison of wind pressure between exposure categories, which is exactly what its Table 26.10-1 would settle.
  2. The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety's 2020 asphalt shingle durability report. It is available to members only. The Institute's public pages are cited instead, and no figure from the report appears here.
  3. The Department of Buildings' current published alteration permit fee schedule. Incompatible per-thousand-dollar rates appear in the material consulted, so no permit fee figure is published on this site at all.
  4. The National Roofing Contractors Association's published caution that the ASTM D7158 classifications exclude Ground Roughness D — the category the city's own exposure map assigns to parts of this borough's shoreline. The statement is attributed to the Association in the research behind this site, but the document carrying it has not been identified to a title and a URL, so it is not listed above and any page using it must name that document first.
